1988
The Central Christian Church officially began in April of 1988 after a mission team was sent here from London. Led by a young married couple, John and Karen Louis, the mission team was made up of a handful of faithful mission team members from Singapore and other parts of the world. From that first tiny mustard seed, the church quickly outgrew its original meeting place – an apartment in Prinsep Street – to over 100 members in its first year alone.
1989
Following on the heels of an amazing Women’s Day at the end of the previous year, the one-year-old church had a congregational invitation service at the Singapore Conference Hall with over one thousand in attendance!
1990
Within less than three years of being established, the church had grown sufficiently to send out its first mission team. An unusually large number of Indonesians had been baptised in Singapore during '88 and '89, so the church leaders saw God's hand at work and dreamt of evangelizing Indonesia, the world's fourth most populated nation. In March 1990, the mission team headed for Jakarta. Since that time, the Jakarta church has planted many more churches across the Indonesian archipelago, resulting in an average of 2,500 disciples worshipping God together each Sunday, with 1,800 meeting in Jakarta alone.
1991
The burden of evangelizing another neighbouring country was on the heart of the Singapore Church. In April 1991, the second mission team was sent out, this time to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where approximately 500 people attend Sunday worship services today. By the end of 1991, after only four short years, the church in Singapore had grown to around 700 in membership. In the same year, the church saw its first major persecution in the form of a defamatory article written in a major religious magazine and two major newspapers. The church filed suit and was ultimately vindicated in 1997, but had to endure years of persecution and false accusations. (see: Legal Victory )
1992
1992 saw the official planting of the Johor Bahru Church in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, the country's second largest city. History was made for the Singapore church when the Kuala Lumpur church sent out a mission team to Penang, Malaysia, becoming the first 'fourth generation' church in the Asia Pacific region.
1993 - 1996
This was a difficult period for the church, with a great deal of external persecution. Fortunately, many courageous young couples rose up to guide the church: Teck Ming & Patrice Lee, Halbert & Bong Louis, Steven & Agnes Tan, Manoharan & Lily M, and Mohan & Helen Nanjundan. They stood in the gap during these trying years and helped the Singapore church stand firm.
1997
God's hand was powerfully evident when the church won its legal case against both newspapers and the magazine. This was not only a historic vindication for the church, but became a precedent in the Singapore legal system (see: Summary of Court Case ).
1998
The newspaper appealed the court's ruling, but God's church prevailed once again when the appeal was rejected. Following this victory, John and Karen Louis were able to return to Singapore to lead the church once more after an absence of seven years. Upon their return, the Louis held a discussion with the older members of the congregation and brainstormed about the direction that the CCC should take in the future. The outcome of the brainstorming: members wanted deep bible teaching, training in marriage and parenting, a restored sense of love in the church between members, and a less frantic focus on outreach. The Louis and the church staff and the lay leaders pledged to build the church with these things in mind in the future.
1999
The church began to grow in stature and was presented with a National Council of Social Service (NCSS) award, together with HOPE worldwide (Singapore) by His Excellency S R Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore, in recognition of its service to the community. The church received this award from President Nathan again in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
2000
By the grace of God the Central Christian Church grew to more than 1,000 in membership. A celebration was held in Kallang Theatre with a gigantic cake, donated by the Secret Recipe chain of restaurants. In addition, in July of 2000 another mission team was sent out, this time to plant a church on Batam, an Indonesian island off the coast of Singapore.
2001
The church was the recipient of a special plaque as a token of appreciation presented by Community Chest's patron H.E. President S.R. Nathan for its volunteer efforts at the 2002 Christmas Light-up ceremony incorporating the Launch of Community Chest's Festive Care & Share fund raising project.
John and Karen Louis inaugurated their “Core Group” and brought in the concept of “team leadership” in the SEA region. All of the church staff who were already parents (22 in number) were certified as Family Educators after taking the course, “Parent Educators Leadership Training” from John Ang and Lynn Lan.
2002
The church began a pre-teen ministry to care for the needs of the kingdom kids who were growing in age and number.
2003
After many years of renting various venues in Singapore each week, the disciples had a dream to worship God in their own church building. In January of 2003 Central Christian Church won a tender for a plot of land in Punggol on which to build a church, and a Groundbreaking Ceremony was held in July. In April of 2003 the church's lay leaders and other members formed working groups to explore issues of contention within our worldwide church organisation, and presented their findings during the regular midweek meetings over a period from June to August, resulting in the church signing a membership covenant in October of that year. In addition, the church staff, including key staff from around the region, were certified in Basic Counselling after taking a 120-hour counselling course from John Ang.
2004
“We Gather Here to Know God and Make God Known” became the church's mission statement, taken from the greatest commandments and the great commission in the bible. Upon the completion of the new church building at the end of the year, four conferences were held: an Asian Leadership Conference, an Asian Christian Conference, a SEA Region Conference and the Grand Opening of the Church building which included a Christmas musical production. In the same year, the church members were asked to write out their five-year dreams. These dreams were put inside a 'time capsule', to be opened in 2009.
2005
The whole year was a milestone because it was our first year occupying our own church building! In addition, the Kids Kingdom Childcare Centre opened in February. Many of our church members participated in the first ever Flag Day for our adopted charity, HOPE worldwide (Singapore) in August. It was co-sponsored by the AIN Society, a Muslim charitable organisation. We also had our Mission Statement Workshops in May, August and October. In the last workshop, we formed small groups. To close out the year we were happy to receive a Certificate of Statutory Completion (CSC) in December - the final government approval needed to permanently operate our church building. Four of the church staff received their Masters in Counselling from Monash University in Melbourne.
2006
Big things start small, and that was certainly the case with our Movie Therapy programme. With the support of the government through its Social Enterprise Fund (SEF), we were able to start this programme with the aim of improving the lives of Singaporeans through counselling and the use of relevant movie scenes. Since then, Movie Therapy has expanded tremendously: it has helped heal many of our counselling clients in one-on-one sessions; in partnership with the Health Promotion Board (HPB) and Hope worldwide (Singapore), it has reached thousands of people in work-places and schools to help with anxiety management, smoking cessation, and resilience building programmes; it has improved the lives of hundreds of families through the Good Enough Parenting and I Choose Us marriage workshops. In 2008, John and Karen Louis were interviewed by Channel News Asia about the growth and benefits of Movie Therapy. May God continue to multiply the fruits of this tiny seed!
2007
Remembering the call to "go to all nations", 2007 was the year that we decided to help our Malaysian brothers and sisters plant churches in the cities of Seremban, Kuantan and Kuching. These plantings were done without sending any full-time missionaries. Rather, the lay leaders and disciples in Singapore were dedicated enough to visit these cities every few months to evangelize and study the bible with the many people met there. Since then, God has moved Bruce and June Tum, Stephen George and Li Kean, and Kok Meng to enter the full-time ministry and lead these plantings. There are now well over 20 devoted disciples in these Malaysian cities.
2008
Central Christian Church reached a 20-year milestone in Singapore! The celebration was kicked off with a month-long event in April, and sermons from powerful visiting speakers: Mark Templer, Bruce Williams, and Douglas Jacoby.
2009
This was one of the busiest years we had as a church! We continued our Good Enough Parenting and Souled Out Singles Programmes, successfully concluded our Passage to Patmos deep teaching series, and hosted disciples from around the region with our SEA Conference, entitled "The Blessing". Fortunately, we were also "busy" with the important things, as spurred on by messages about evangelism from Kevin Maines (Los Angeles), we recommitted ourselves to the conviction that every disciple needs to be involved in the life of someone else showing them love as well as showing them the gospel. Finally, we closed off the year by opening the time capsule of our "Five Year Dreams" that we had dedicated ever since the church building was opened in 2004. It was an inspiring time as we heard the stories of how many disciples had their dreams answered by God many times more than they had first imagined.
