Preventing Lifetraps, a Parenting Programme using Movie TherapyTM
based on Schema Therapy founded by Dr. Jeffrey Young;
developed by John & Karen Louis, HOPE worldwide (Singapore)
Synopsis:
Research has shown that when core needs are not met during the formative years of a child, “Lifetraps” (schemas) will develop. These core needs are:
1. Basic Safety
2. Stable Base & Predictability
3. Guidance & Protection
4. Love, Nurturing & Attention
5. Empathy
6. Validation of Feelings
7. Acceptance & Praise
When “Lifetraps” are formed, the person’s views of self and of others will get distorted, which in turn will affect his or her psychological health.
“Good-Enough Parenting” - a series of six parenting workshops - is based on Schema Therapy founded by Dr. Jeffrey Young, and was developed by John and Karen Louis. John Louis is a member of the International Society for Schema Therapy.
While no one’s parenting can ever be perfect, “Good-Enough Parenting” offers a step-by-step guide on how parents can learn to meet these core needs, and provide parenting that is “good-enough” to prevent Lifetraps from developing in their children. John and Karen Louis hold Master Degrees in Counselling from Monash University of Melbourne, Australia. Both are Professional Members of the American and the Australian Counselling Associations, and are also Registered Counsellors with the Singapore Association for Counselling. As Founders of Movie TherapyTM in Singapore, John and Karen have incorporated the use of Movie TherapyTM as a teaching tool in this parenting series. Scenes from thirty movies will be used to deliver various teaching points, making this programme unique, captivating and impacting. Married for over 20 years with two active teenagers, the Louis will inspire parents with their personal experiences.
