About SILRA:
Since its inception in 1971, the Singapore Leprosy Relief Association (SILRA) Home has been providing food, lodging, recreation and healthcare services for ex-leprosy patients. It also teaches patients some handicraft skills and rehabilitative work. Currently, there are 55 beneficiaries living in the Home located at 80 Buangkok View.
Often ostracized by family and friends due to their condition, many of the residents have suffered lonely, deprived lives. Though they have all been healed, some continue to be abandoned while others are still shunned by society because of their appearance. What they need apart from basic care is some love and attention, which we hope to bring to them through our befriending programme at the Home.
Volunteering at the Home has been a fulfilling and moving experience for many of our volunteers. For example, it was thanks to these visits that we befriended Mr. Lim Kah Lee, who contracted leprosy at the age of 10, and was subsequently abandoned by his parents at just 14. Despite losing both legs and having gnarled hands, he went on to become an artist.
Inspired by Mr. Lim's brave journey, a HOPE worldwide Singapore volunteer, Kenny Chen, says, "When I think of Kah Lee's situation, I feel very sad for him, being abandoned by his loved ones and losing both of his legs. He could have given up on his life, but he chose to fight on and dream about his future. Compared to me, I can only feel blessed to have a comfortable life and a relationship with God."
